Major tenants include the Viking subsidiaries Brisbane Shiplifts & Boatyard, comprising 12 ha, and the Furniture Manufacturing Company of Australia (FMCA). The remainder of BMIP (28 ha) will be devoted to marine industrial use, focusing on marine warehousing and service supply. The master plan includes establishing an extractive industries precinct to attract businesses such as Boral/Hanson and the Hanson Batching Plant.
Chicago Bridge and Iron (CBI), sub-contracted by Bechtel Corporation, fabricated the bulk of the components for the Comalco Gladstone Alumina Refinery at BMIP during 2002-2004. Transfield and John Holland were also subcontractors on this project. Construction of modules up to 400 tonne occurred at BMIP, with modules shipped to Gladstone by barge. The refinery commenced operations in April 2005. A 6.3 ha site is under development to build on this experience and create an enduring fabrication capability at BMIP to provide facilities for future construction projects such as the CBI/Bechtel refinery module work, and for the Royal Australian Navy's upcoming air warfare destroyer and amphibious ship programs.
